It is usually planted with native species. Rain gardens increase the amount of water that filters into the ground, recharging local aquifers. They help protect from flooding and drainage problems.

Rain gardens protect streams and lakes from pollutants carried by urban storm water such as lawn fertilizers, pesticides, oil residue, etc.. They provide habitat for birds and butterflies.
