2019 Lenten Giving

February 27, 2019 by Heather

This year’s recipient for St. Therese’s Lenten Giving effort is Children’s Hospital Foundation.  The money collected will be used to purchase games and art supplies to provide a tiny distraction to seriously ill children.

Lenten banks and boxes are at the exits.  They can be returned anytime during Lent.  Just put the whole thing in the collection basket.  If you put in a check, please make it out to St. Therese and put Children’s Hospital or Lenten Giving in the memo line.  One check will be sent to the Children’s Hospital Foundation.

Even if you are unable to donate, please offer a Lenten prayer for those very sick children, their caregivers, and the people who try to brighten their day with a game or an art project.

The Catholic Church asks each member to preserve the penitential character and purpose of Lent. For this reason:

  • Catholics who have celebrated their 14th birthday are bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and each Friday of Lent.
  • Catholics who have celebrated their 18th birthday, in addition to abstaining from meat, should fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Hence, on those days they should eat only one full meal. Smaller quantities of food may be taken at two other meals, but no food should be consumed at other times during those two days. The obligation of fasting ceases with the celebration of one’s 59th birthday.

Catholics should not lightly excuse themselves from these prescribed minimal penitential practices.

You Are Invited To: The Changing Face of Parish Life in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee

On Sunday, March 10th, join us for 9:00am Mass, followed by a presentation by Fr. Steven Avella titled, “The Changing Face of Parish Life in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee” at 10:30AM in Heck Hall. Coffee and continental breakfast will be provided. This free event is sponsored by St. Therese Parish. All Are Welcome!

He has written histories of the archdiocese, the Salvatorian community, and various other dioceses throughout the US.
