It’s holiday decorating time and we’ve got a couple of “green” decorating tips for you. Your home can be festive and eco-friendly this year!

If you get a live tree make sure no harmful pesticides or fertilizers were used when growing it so you can mulch it or compost it for your garden after the holidays. Or, if you prefer artificial trees, look for one at a “pre-loved” store like Goodwill.

Send a holiday e-card. About 2.5 billion holiday cards are sold each year. You can save money and the planet by sending yours electronically!

Decorate and reuse brown paper bags for eco-friendly wrapping paper with a personal touch. Or, buy recycled wrapping paper.

Use LED or solar powered lights to decorate your house and save energy.

Wrap presents in re-usable items, such as a scarf, dish towel, or canvas bags for grocery shopping!

There are lots more things you can do to make this holiday season more earth-friendly! Just think about how people used to decorate before there was so much mass produced holiday stuff. Use cut evergreen branches and fruits and nuts for fragrant decorations. Consider baking edible gingerbread holiday ornaments and reusing decorations you already have instead of buying new ones.

Tips from the St. Therese Green Team

Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to operate a TV for 3 hours.

If no one requested ATM receipts it would save 2 billion feet of paper a year.

Bring a mug with you when you stop for coffee. Added benefit: most coffee shops give you a discount for this!

Try using vinegar and water as a glass and countertop cleaner.

If we all recycled 25% of our newspapers, we could save close to 70,000 trees.

Lettuce and herb gardens can be grown year round indoors.

Have a “swap” party with your neighbors and friends!

Buy food from the bulk aisle. There is no packaging to dispose of. As an added bonus, it’s cheaper!

Drive off as soon as you start your car’s engine. Modern engines don’t need time to warm up.

Play a board game instead of watching TV or a DVD.

Arrange to have your bills sent electronically to reduce paper waste.

Pay your bills on line. Many banks offer free online banking.

Hang your clothes out to dry. You’ll be amazed how wonderful they smell!

Air dry dishes instead of using your dishwasher’s drying cycle.

Clean the lint filter in the dryer after every load to improve air circulation.

Turn off your computer and monitor when not in use.

Wash and dry full loads. If you are washing a small load, use the appropriate water-level setting.

Keep tires properly inflated and aligned to improve your gasoline mileage by around 3.3%.

Check into telecommuting, carpooling and public transit to cut mileage and car maintenance costs.

Clear out your car; extra weight decreases gas mileage.

Consider light wall colors to minimize the need for artificial lighting.

Lower the thermostat on your hot water heater to 120° F
